Why is art important for beginning readers?

We value that children who are beginning readers understand and can talk about a lot more than they can initially read. We wanted to create books for beginning readers that respect what kids bring to the beginning reading process. Because of the beautiful art we use, our stories are much richer than the amount of the words on the page. This allows children's imagination to take off—even if there are only one, two, or five words on the page.

Home Grown Books are enjoyed by "non readers" as well as more advanced readers because they are such a pleasure to look at and think about. They also are enjoyed by non-english speakers who, as well, understand a lot more conceptually than they are able to read or say in their new language.

Thinking about this, we are so excited to be working on our third book pack, The City & Country Book Pack, by artist Sara Woster. She brings a beautiful painterly aesthetic to her oil paintings. Kids will relate to so many of her themes and fall into her images. Sledding, pie making, a walk through a city and making a fort are just some of the fun and wonderful books we look forward to in the next pack of books.

We can't wait for you to enjoy all of the beautiful books in the Home Grown Books collection!
