Which book pack is right for my child?

All of our books are made for children who are emergent, or beginning, readers. We often get asked what book packs are right for the typical beginning reader, or what book pack is right for an average 4 year old. It's hard to assign an age range to this developmental period, because as a child begins to read, there may be a range of learners who are developing in different ways. It's best to look at the signs your child may be showing that they are ready to read to pick the best books for them—like pretending to read or write, or naming letters. Here's a breakdown of how each of our packs fit within the beginning reading phase:

The Play Book Pack

The Play Book Pack
This is our simplest pack and is perfect for a child who is just beginning the reading process. The pack includes five books with 1 word per page, two books with 2 words per page, one book with 3 words per page, and one book with 1 sentence per page. The vocabulary in this pack is simple, and the word patterns on each page are consistent.

This book pack is for emergent readers who:
- pretend to read and write
- may know some letters and sounds
- begin to match spoken words with print

While reading The Play Book Pack, children in this phase will benefit from:
- supported practice of reading while reading engaging, predictable books with pictures that clearly relate to and illustrate the storyline
- experience with rhyming and other word play
- seeing reading and writing models through listening to good stories and seeing others write meaningful messages

The Environmental Book Pack

The Environmental Book Pack -- Intermediate
This pack is more advanced than The Play Book Pack, but less advanced than The Adventuring Book Pack. It includes two books with 1 word per page, one book with 2 words per page, one book with 5 words per page, two books with 1 sentence per page, and one book with 2 sentences per page. There is some unusual vocabulary in her books that children will enjoy learning (for example: "a yurt" in a book about types of homes).

This book pack is for emergent readers who:
- pretend to read and write
- begin to match spoken words with print
- identify most letters by name and can use some letter/sound knowledge to help figure out words
- use pictures, story patterns, context, and meaning as well as phonics to make sense of print

While reading The Environmental Book Pack, children in this phase will benefit from:
- experience with rhyming and other word play
- seeing reading and writing models through listening to good stories and seeing others write meaningful messages
- continued exposure to shared and guided reading of patterned stories with clear print and pictures

The City & Country Book Pack

The City & Country Book Pack -- Intermediate
This pack is more advanced than The Play Book Pack, but less advanced than The Adventuring Book Pack. It includes two books with 1 word per page, two books with 2 words per page, one book with 3 words per page, two books with 1 sentence per page, and one book with 2 sentences per page. Two books have alternating, but consistent, phrases every other page (for example: "I make.. I take.. I make.. I take.."), which is a bit more challenging than having the same sentence structure on each page.

This book pack is for emergent readers who:
- pretend to read and write
- begin to match spoken words with print
- identify most letters by name and can use some letter/sound knowledge to help figure out words
- use pictures, story patterns, context, and meaning as well as phonics to make sense of print

While reading The City & Country Book Pack, children in this phase will benefit from:
- experience with rhyming and other word play
- seeing reading and writing models through listening to good stories and seeing others write meaningful messages
- continued exposure to shared and guided reading of patterned stories with clear print and pictures

The Adventuring Book Pack

The Adventuring Book Pack -- Advanced
This is our most advanced book pack, and is great for a beginning reader with a large vocabulary, or an English as a second language learner. This set includes one book with 1 word per page, one book with 3 words per page, two books with 4 words per page, and three books with 5 words per page. In a 3 word book, you may find vocabulary such as "a fearless acrobat" and "a clever inventor", which will challenge and interest beginning readers.

This book pack is for emergent readers who:
- pretend to read and write
- begin to match spoken words with print
- identify most letters by name and can use some letter/sound knowledge to help figure out words
- use pictures, story patterns, context, and meaning as well as phonics to make sense of print

While reading The Adventuring Book Pack, children in this phase will benefit from:
- supported practice of reading while reading engaging, predictable books with pictures that clearly relate to and illustrate the storyline
- experience with rhyming and other word play
- seeing reading and writing models through listening to good stories and seeing others write meaningful messages
- continued exposure to shared and guided reading of patterned stories with clear print and pictures
